Consultation has concluded
The Town of Smiths Falls has two new "mute" swans that will soon be placed in the Victoria Basin. We are seeking input from the community to help name the new duo. Suggestions must be submitted by May 15. Residents can vote on their favourite suggestions by "liking" the submission on Speak Up Smiths Falls. The top three most "liked" options will be forwarded to a selection committee comprised of the Mayor, Council members, a member from the Chamber of Commerce, a Member from the DBA and a Member of the Community. The selection committee will vote on their favourite names. The new names will be announced on Tuesday, May 19.
About "mute swans"
The Mute Swan is one of the world's largest waterfowl and one of three swan species in North America. Mute swans were brought to North America by European settlers during the 1870s to adorn parks, gardens and estates. They are large birds that weigh between 11 kilograms (kg) and 19 kg. Mute swans are not actually mute. The name derives from it being less vocal than other swan species.
